This cantata for the first Sunday of Advent, was composed in Weimar and first sounded on 2 December1714 in the court chapel of Duke William Ernst of Saxe-Weimar. This cantata was performed again on 28 November 1723 in Leipzig. On this first Advent Sunday of the church year, the expectation of the Messiah's return is made palpable. This cantata belongs to the so-called Christmas Circle of the church year, which runs from the 1st Sunday of Advent to the 4th Sunday after Epiphany or Epiphany. After that, the Easter cycle begins 50 days before and 50 days after Easter.
