Reisopera - To Die For [A Comedy]

Tour in the Netherlands from 11 April to 30 April 2026

Information:

The British-Russian composer Elena Langer satirizes and questions our obsession with fame, showing us how to embrace life in all its chaotic, horrific, joyful, and beautiful dimensions. Originally commissioned by the Stanislavski-Nemirovich-Danchenko Theatre in Moscow, the opera was cancelled after the invasion of Ukraine. It was deemed not patriotic enough. De Reisopera is proud to present the world premiere of this remarkable new opera.

The Story

The existential anxiety of the protagonist, Semyon Podsekayev, drives him to suicide, though he hopes that playing the tuba will be his salvation. This hope fails miserably. At that very moment, several characters appear, eager to exploit Semyon’s potential suicide for their own benefit. One of these figures is a television host, Ivan Vane. In the second act, we witness the reality show “The Naked Truth”, in which Semyon’s wish to die—and everyone’s eagerness to profit from it—becomes a public spectacle.
