Information:
Adultery versus marital fidelity.
Misogyny versus a liberal glimpse into the female soul.
Der Rosenkavalier contains a multitude of themes, making this revolutionary musical work both beloved and reviled since its premiere in Dresden in 1911.
At a time when women were striving to assume an increasingly prominent role in society and one of Freud's theories, that sexuality is the cause of a disturbed psyche, was circulating, three cosmopolitan men—Richard Strauss, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Harry Graf Kessler created Der Rosenkavalierfor three tormented sopranos and a saucy baritone, who battle the transience of love.
The dubious answer to the question of whether eternal love and its attendant marital fidelity exist permeates every note and word of this incredibly thrilling theatrical comedy!
