Based on the well-known fairy tale of Cinderella, this is a heartwarming comic opera for young and old alike. The promising Dutch director Lysanne van Overbeek shows that Cinderella doesn’t just wait to be rescued; she takes her fate into her own hands.
Poor Cinderella has to scrub and clean all day long, while her two snobbish stepsisters do nothing. When a poor beggar comes to the door one day, Cinderella shows her kind heart by giving him food. And as it turns out, that vagabond is none other than Prince Ramiro’s disguised advisor…
This opera masterfully combines comic scenes with moving and magical moments, and Rossini’s music is exuberant and accessible. Although the story doesn’t quite match the Grimm fairy tale or the Disney film, the opera has a wonderfully romantic happy ending!
