Information
At Bach on Friday, you don’t just hear beautiful music—you also discover the story behind it. During every concert, we take you into the world of Bach and the composers featured alongside him on the program. We tell you about their lives, explain how the music is structured, and reveal the motifs and musical ideas that make a composition so special. This way, you’ll listen with fresh ears and discover more and more in the music.
When Bach and opera meet…
Bach and opera? A surprising combination? Certainly not! Although Bach himself did not write operas, his music exudes the same drama, emotion, and expressiveness.
During this concert, Bach’s impressive cantata *Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ* (BWV 33) and the world of opera come together. You’ll hear the captivating sounds of Bellini’s famous aria *Casta Diva*, Donizetti’s virtuosic *Grande Offertorio*, and music by Handel and Monteverdi.
Soprano Francis van Broekhuizen is our special guest this evening. With her beautiful voice and her characteristic enthusiasm, she not only sings but also takes you on a journey through the stories behind the works and tells you about the composers, the music, and the special details you might otherwise miss. Thus, this evening will not only be a musical experience but will also give you a behind-the-scenes look at the music you hear.
Program:
J.S. Bach—Cantata BWV 33 “Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ”
