INFORMATION
Passion season is Bach season—and that goes for the Phion Orchestra as well. Of the thousands of Passions written over the centuries, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion is without a doubt the best known. And also the most compelling. Faithful to the biblical text, enriched with magnificent arias and choruses, it tells the story of Christ’s suffering and death according to the Gospel of Matthew. “It’s just like opera,” some of his contemporaries remarked. But that is precisely what makes this music so grand, so intense—as if you were there yourself.
Alongside six distinguished soloists, Concensus Vocalis—a long-standing partner of the orchestra—will perform the choral parts. The entire performance will be conducted by Jan Willem de Vriend, former chief conductor of Phion’s predecessor, the Orkest van het Oosten, and still a welcome guest conductor with the orchestra.
